Chapter 24: Learning about Steven

“I found some information for you,” Diane said to Dan as he walked up to the circulation desk. “Come on back.”

She gestured for him to follow, and he did so, the two of them entering her office. Diane sat in the chair behind her desk, and he took the one opposite to her. Off to the computer’s right, placed at an angle so he could only partially see it, was a photograph in a black wooden frame. From what he could see, Diane was in a wedding dress, holding the hands of a man whom Dan couldn’t discern.

“So, here’s what I found out.” Her voice brought his attention back to her, and he felt guilty, having glanced at her wedding portrait. Diane hadn’t noticed, and relief coursed through him. “Steven Deschenes, age ten, was killed in 1952. His father claimed it was an accident, that a hatchet had tumbled off the shelf in the shed when the two of them went out to cut wood.”

“Claimed?”

Diane nodded, shifting her focus from the computer to him. She smiled wanly. “Turns out the boy’s father didn’t go in and call the police. Or anyone. Instead, he dragged his son’s body through the woods behind a couple of neighboring houses and then dumped the body there. He covered him with leaves and branches.”

“Why?” Dan shook his head, confused and sickened.

“The police asked the same question. He told them he was drunk, and he panicked.”

“What happened to the father?”

“Justice, I suppose.”

Dan looked at her with a raised eyebrow.

Diane sighed. “He was arrested, charged with first-degree murder, and tried. They convicted him of negligent homicide and sent him to the state prison in Concord.”

“How much time did he spend in prison?”

“He was supposed to do ten years.”

Dan winced. “How much did he actually do?”

“Three months.”

“What!”

Diane held up a hand, and the smile on her face was grim and terrible. “Someone beat him to death in his cell.”

“Do they know who?”

She shook her head. “They suspect it was a pair of the guards. Steven’s maternal grandfather was a police lieutenant in Manchester.”

“Wow.” Dan couldn’t think of anything else to say. “I mean, wow. I didn’t know that. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, Dan.” She smiled. “I was going to come by last night, but I got caught up with some work, and I didn’t want to scare you by pulling into the cemetery after ten.”

“You were here that late?”

She nodded. “Yes. We were having issues with the heating system. Really don’t want to accidentally poison everyone with carbon monoxide.”

“No, definitely not.” Dan chuckled and smiled at her. “Big plans for today?”

“Not yet. Have any ideas?” she asked.

“Lunch? Somewhere inside? It’s a little chilly out there today.”

“I like it when it’s chilly.”

He looked at her, surprised. “You do?”

“I do. It lets me sit closer to you.” She winked, and Dan felt himself blush. Diane laughed playfully. “Dan Tate, you are the sweetest man there is. Lunch in the park?”

“Lunch in the park,” he agreed. “Thank you again, Diane.
